Everyone has procrastinated at some point, putting off important tasks again and again. However when the “to do” list gets too long it can have an unfavourable impact when it comes to achieving goals and getting important work done. Don’t let procrastination stop you fulfilling your potential. Maybe now is the time to make that career change or the time to take up that course you have been planning to study. Take action and pursue your passion.
- Commit to your goals and give yourself a deadline
Commitment is fundamental in order to keep yourself focused on your goal. However, a goal without planning and a deadline is destined to fail. Therefore, it is important to look at achieving your goal by setting yourself achievable tasks. Set yourself deadlines for each of these tasks and work on them every day.
- Setting realistic goals
Dreaming big is good; however it is very important to set realistic goals that you can actually accomplish in the timeline that you want. Make sure that your goals are SMART, in other words; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. Unrealistic goals will lead to failure reducing your confidence and will likely lead to more procrastinating.
- Don’t overestimate deadlines
One of the most common mistakes that the majority of us make is overestimating how much time we have available to complete a task. One way to avoid this mistake is by taking action to get things done. All the planning in the world won’t help you achieve your goals unless you take action.
- Be self-aware
Are you easily distracted? Do you find it difficult to get started? You need to be aware why you procrastinate and be conscious of the habits that allow you to delay making decisions. Get rid of all the distractions around you, such as social media, TV, checking emails or using your phone. There are some very useful apps such as Freedom to help keep you to reduce distractions.
- Change your surroundings
Your surroundings have an impact on your productivity and can slow down how quickly you complete your tasks. Therefore, if you feel your environment is not inspiring you to get things done, then it is time to change things around. Look for a different place to work or study before you lose the momentum.
- Waiting for the perfect time
Are you waiting for the perfect time to change career or take up that course you have been planning to study? There is NEVER going to be a perfect time. If you want to accomplish something, the perfect time is NOW. Once you get started, you will often find yourself with more energy and enthusiasm than you thought you had.
