In the second of a series of articles, we continue to look at where the graduate class of 2015 are, based upon the HEA’s recently released ‘What do graduates do? The class of 2015’.
This survey, the 25th of its kind, was published on February 15th and, mostly, points to an optimistic prognosis when it comes to graduate careers in Ireland. However, when it comes to the relevance of qualifications, there are quite differing views depending on the level of qualification and the sector of employment.
Graduates and qualifications
For graduates of 2015, 62% of Honours Bachelor Degree holders rated the relevance of their qualifications as relevant or most relevant to their current area of employment. Meanwhile, 76% of graduates with Higher Diplomas and Postgraduate Diplomas found their qualifications more relevant or most relevant to their work. 70% of Masters and Doctorate graduates rate their qualification as relevant or most relevant to their work, while interestingly, 11% rate it as irrelevant or most irrelevant.
62% of graduate with Honours Bachelor Degrees found that their educational qualification was relevant/most relevant to the area of employment, compared to 59% with a Masters or Doctorate qualification. This compares to Higher and Postgraduate Diploma graduates who have the lowest level of satisfaction, with just 53% viewing their qualification to be relevant/most relevant to their area of employment.
Employed in Ireland and Overseas
Agriculture, Forestries, Fisheries & Veterinary, Helath and Welfare and Education Honours Bachelor Degree graduates reported the highest levels of relevance between their employment and education, at 86%, 84% and 82% respectively.
The majority of Masters and Doctorate graduates, as would be expected, reported high levels of relevance between their educational qualification and their employment. Fields that rated their education particularly relevant included Health and Welfare (86%), Engineering, Manufacturing & Construction (82%) and Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries & Veterinary (80%).
Interestingly, high proportions of Arts & Humanities graduates rated their education as irrelevant/most irrelevant to their employment, with 51% of Honours Degree holders, 26% of Higher or Postgraduate Diploma holders and 29% of Masters and Doctorate holders of this opinion.

This survey, the 25th of its kind, was published on February 15th and, mostly, points to an optimistic prognosis when it comes to graduate careers in Ireland.
There were 18,526 students surveyed, with qualifications between levels 8-10.
Overall, 68% are in employment, with 57% employed in Ireland and a further 11% are working overseas. Only 6% of all graduates surveyed are still seeking employment nine months after graduation.
Those with Honours Bachelor Degrees
From the class of 2014, nine months after graduation, 58% were in employment. This has risen to 62% for the class of 2015, with the vast majority (85%) of them working in Ireland. Only one in ten graduates are going overseas to seek their first job, with the UK still viewed as the most favourable destination.
In terms of where the jobs are in different sectors, there is still a huge demand for teachers, and graduates in this area have the highest rates of employment. After education, IT has the highest proportion of employed graduates, at 70%, which reflects the consistent growth in this area.
One of the stranger results of the study was that graduates who were awarded a pass degree demonstrated the highest levels of employment (74%) while those who received a first-class Honours degree had the lowest, at 57%. The reverse is true in terms of progression into further study. While this finding is unusual, it is perhaps attributable to the fact that a higher award is necessary for acceptance into postgraduate study, with those who obtain first class honours more likely to pursue further study.
Those with Higher & Postgraduate Diplomas
78% of those with these Diplomas are in employment, up from 76% from the class of 2014, with 75% employed in Ireland, compared to 68% from the class of 2014. This has led to only 3% seeking employment overseas, down from 8% in the previous year’s research.
Those with Masters/Doctorates
80% of Masters and PhD graduates are in employment, with 64% finding work in Ireland and the remainder overseas, with the UK the most popular. The sectors with the highest rates of employment for Masters and doctoral students were Business, Administration & Law and Education students at 87% and 86% respectively.

Cathy O’Donohoe of Pluto, official partners of gradireland, has compiled some tips on why your need to make you display truly stand out and represent something that can align with the values of the graduates you are seeking to attract.
Every exhibitor recruiting at a graduate recruitment fair has a ‘cut-through’ challenge. How does your corporate brand resonate in a room full of graduates, with dozens of other brands competing for the exact same talent? Exhibitors need to excite to attract. Large corporations need to examine what attracts a graduate to an exhibiting employer, when so many other doors are potentially open to explore in the very same room. Given the number of years that an employee can invest with an employer, graduates need to feel that a potential employer has brand values that align to their own. Those values need to be aspirational, current and relevant. At the very least, the basic design of the stand needs to be current and ‘on –trend’, given the multitude of brands that graduates and students are exposed to through various mediums and platforms on a daily basis. Time and time again, corporate employers invest in taking space at graduate recruitment fairs but don’t invest in updating their stand – often taking out something that was used previously and merely dusting it down. If the stand isn’t exciting, the perception will be that the opportunity for employment with that company isn’t very exciting either. Graduates should leave your stand incredibly excited about the opportunities that the journey ahead may bring them, should they choose to invest their future with you. To invest in a space, without investing in the stand design, can be potentially lethal for an employer brand.
The strong trend for design in 2017 will be led by the following key influences: Scandinavian touch, steel and wood, theatrical elements, geometric imagery and mesh and Lighting. So what do these mean?
- Scandinavian touch: Continues to influence design. This trend includes light pastel hues, strong colour accents, clean and light wood, mix & match furnishings and a general sense of playfulness.
- Steel and wood: A box section & feature wood cladding dominates this trend.
- Theatrical fun: Creates a tangible zone for customer interaction, such as installing a single feature piece.
- Geometric: Creates immediate modernity with seamless patterns creating depth.
- Mesh and lights: Stands out with opaque lighting features, abundance of mesh types and the use of mesh partitions.

Careers fairs are an amazing opportunity for students, graduates and young professionals to get the ‘inside scoop’ of a company, find out the opportunities they have available as well as the disciplines that they are interested in hiring in.
Preparation is key when it comes to careers fair, so we have put together some helpful tips for the day of the fair:
Use the Jobs Wall
There will be several jobs walls within the hall at the gradireland Graduate Careers Fair. These will have live graduate schemes and opportunities listed, use your phone and take a photo of any that you are interested in applying to – then go home, find the job, internship or graduate programme on gradireland.com and start applying!
Bring your CV
Many employers are happy to receive CVs at Careers Fairs. In addition, at the gradireland Graduate Careers Fair we will be running a specialist CV Clinic, hosted by careers advisors from your University providing over 50 hours of specialist advice, at which you can have your CV reviewed. However, a word of caution – the CV clinic has a limited number of slots and gets booked up very quickly, so get there early to book your appointment and don’t expect the advisors to write your CV for you – they are there to review and advise but you’ll have to do the hard work first yourself!
Make sure you have researched the exhibitors who are attending and decide beforehand which ones you would like to talk to. Think of questions which might not be answered already in brochures or on their websites. Many exhibitors bring recent graduates now working in their business to their stands, so ask them what life is really like in that company.
Attend the Seminars
Make sure you attend one or more of the specialist careers seminars – they are designed to give you the edge when it comes to applications and interviews! From Assessment Centres to Interview advice there is a seminar to benefit everyone.

It’s not unusual for students who are not yet in final year to be unsure about attending the Graduate Careers Fair. You lucky souls are still out there enjoying college life and may not have thought a lot about careers or the future. Well here are a few of the questions that you may get an answer to by attending this year’s Graduate Careers Fair:
Do I know what Career Path I would like to pursue?
This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest decision you will have to make before leaving college. There is so much to take into account, including the area you would like to work in, job prospects, the companies that are recruiting in your field, the locations of these companies and salary expectations. It is very difficult to find credible answers to these questions without speaking to the employers in person.

CV Clinics are being held at the Graduate Career Fair with experts from Careers Services throughout Ireland. These experts will provide you with the advice you need to get that dream job! Keep in mind that many Graduate Programmes open for applications in September each year, meeting these CV Experts could put you ahead of the competition for next year’s applications.
Am I interested in doing an internship?
Internships are amazing opportunities to gain experience in a particular job or to find out about the culture of a particular company. Employers also take this essential experience into account when recruiting graduates, giving your CV an edge to get a job. Many of the employers attending the Graduate Careers Fair recruit students for internships and work placements. This is a great opportunity to network with these employers to see what internship opportunities they may have.

Employer branding has become a core element for organisations to attract the most talented graduates to your workplace. Your potential graduate candidates, Millennials and Gen Z, are digital natives spending up to 5.4 hours a day browsing different social media channels. This means that social media is one of the most effective tool to catch the attention of graduates.
Social media gives you the flexibility to allow prospective candidates to take a look inside your organisation, get an insight into its culture and values, to determine if it is the right organisation for them. In order to successfully implement social media to your employer branding campaign, it’s important to develop a social media strategy to complement your already existing employer branding campaign. We have put together some tips to consider;
Know your audience
Determining your target audience is very important when it comes to social media. In order to produce relevant content, you must be able to identify your audience’s demographics, interests and needs. A lot of this information can be found by examining your existing social media audience on Google Analytics, Facebook Insights and Twitter Analytics as well as researching the Millennial or Gen Z audience. This information can be used to enhance your social media presence by producing relevant content that will attract your desired target market. Develop a different strategy for each platform
Social media platforms differ significantly in relation to audience and tone of voice. For example; the tone of voice and overall purpose of LinkedIn is much more professional and formal than that of Facebook. By knowing your audience and combining this with your overall employer branding objectives, you can develop effective strategies on each platform to reach your target market. A good example of a company that uses social media to attract talent is Version 1. In 2014 Version 1 introduced a Breaking Bad themed social media campaign to attract graduate talent. The campaign was based around a play on the television series titled ‘Breaking Grads’, with accompanying themed artwork. The campaign became a huge talking point among the target audience with its nod to popular culture at the time, while also giving students a taste of the Version 1 company culture.
Measure and adjust
Congratulations, you have launched you social media strategy! But now, you have to measure its effectiveness. To do this, you must outline the business objectives you would like to achieve through social media. These objectives could include an increase in candidate leads, more applicants or brand awareness to name just a few. Once these are identified, revert to your analytical tools to see if the social media strategy has met your desired objectives, if it has, great, if not don’t panic, just adjust and try again!
Social media is an amazing tool for employer brand amplification. This, combined with a comprehensive employer branding campaign, could put your organisation ahead of the competition for attracting graduate talent.
